Pet Pantry Tops 100,000 Meals

Volunteers loading bags of donated pet food for distribution

The hundred-thousandth meal went into a paper sack on a Saturday morning in June, handed across a folding table to a man named Gerald and his fourteen-year-old beagle, Duchess. Nobody made a speech. He said thank you, she wagged, and the line kept moving.

Nine years ago the Pet Rescue Pantry was four volunteers, a rolling cart, and about two hundred pounds of donated kibble in a supply closet. This year it will distribute more than nine tons of food to families around Spring, Klein, Tomball, and Humble.

The math nobody expects

Here is the thing about a pet pantry that surprises people: it is the cheapest animal-welfare program we run, by an enormous margin.

Taking in a surrendered dog costs us roughly $680 across intake, medical care, housing, and adoption. Keeping that same dog in the home he already has, with a family who already loves him, costs about $12 a month in food. We estimate the pantry kept 340 pets out of the shelter system last year alone.

Almost nobody surrenders a pet because they stopped loving them. They surrender because something broke — a job, a car, a marriage, a diagnosis. A bag of food is sometimes the whole difference. — Maria Delgado, Executive Director

No paperwork, no questions

We have never required proof of income, and we never will. The five minutes it takes to prove you are poor enough to deserve help is five minutes that stops people from asking at all. If you need food for your animal, you are eligible. That is the entire policy.

Distribution runs the last Saturday of every month from 10am until supplies run out, and emergency assistance is available at the front desk any weekday we are open. We also keep drop-off shelves stocked at partner churches in Klein, Tomball, and Humble.

How to help

Unopened dry and canned food, litter, and unused leashes and collars can be dropped off during all open hours. Cash goes further than you would think — our bulk purchasing turns $25 into roughly 90 meals.
